The rescue organisation has been in existence since 2001 and includes the fire brigade, the rescue service, the civil defence, the operational control center, the fire police of the city of Zurich as well as the rescue services of the Zurich airport. In addition, Schutz & Rettung Zürich operates a Higher Technical school for Rescue professions (HFRB). As a service department of the Security department of the City of Zürich, Schutz & Rettung Zürich employs around 650 staff members and around 2.700 militiamen from the civil defence and milita fire departements. The rescue service and the fire brigade of Schutz & Rettung alone cover over 40.000 operations a year. Vehicles of all types come to use in the different departements, such as cars, various fire lorries and rescue service vehicles.
